Legend
- Same type · Both people share a number: much goes without saying, and you can trip over the same things together.
- Wing neighbors · Side by side on the circle, each a possible wing of the other: alike, yet not quite.
- Joined by a line · An inner line joins them: in theory, one moves toward the other under stress, the other moves back along it when at ease.
- Not directly connected · No shared wing or line: you start from different places, with room to fill each other’s gaps.

How to read Enneagram compatibility
Enneagram compatibility is not a score that sorts couples into good and bad matches. It is closer to a map: it puts what two people want to protect and what they fear side by side, so you can see where they complete each other and where misunderstandings tend to start. Find the cell where your number meets theirs.
The nine types sit on a circle, and inner lines join some of them. The pairings are read from where two types sit on that figure: in Enneagram theory, neighbors on the circle can be each other’s wings, and on a line one type’s stress direction meets the other’s growth direction.
Each pairing page covers where core motivations and fears collide, how each side can talk to the other, how the pair differs in love, at work and as friends, and what happens when their stress and growth directions meet. The figure is only a starting point; the same pairing plays out very differently with each person’s maturity and circumstances.
How to read the chart
- Find your type in the rows and the other person’s in the columns, then open the cell where they meet. Type 1 × Type 4 and Type 4 × Type 1 open the same page.
- The symbol shows how the two types sit on the figure: = same type, ≈ wing neighbors, — joined by a line, × not directly connected.
- On each pairing page, read what draws you together and where you clash first, then pick one talking tip for your side.
- If you do not know your type yet, take the Enneagram test first; and ask the other person for theirs rather than guessing.
Common questions
What is the best Enneagram match?
There is no single best match. Some say pairs that soften conflict, such as 9 and 2, feel easy, or that types on one line help each other grow, but how satisfying a relationship is depends far more on how maturely both people look after themselves and talk than on type.
How do I check Enneagram compatibility?
Find the cell where your type meets the other person’s and read that pairing’s page. Check first whether the two types are the same, wing neighbors or joined by a line, then read where your core motivations and fears tend to collide.
Are two people of the same type compatible?
They understand each other easily and can get stuck in the same places. When both are worn out, they tend to sway in the same direction, which can magnify shared weak spots; different wings and maturity can make two people of one type feel quite different.
How do wings and lines affect compatibility?
They are clues to the texture of a relationship, not the outcome. Wing neighbors are alike enough that small differences stand out; on a line, one type’s worn-out side overlaps with the side the other grows into, and knowing this helps you misread each other less.
These pairing notes are a starting point for understanding each other, not a psychological diagnosis or a verdict on a relationship. People with the same pairing can look quite different.
