AS and SA Holland codes: Artistic meets Social
Common in people who want to use pictures, words, music or performance to move someone and help them grow.
Hexagon relationship: Adjacent on the hexagon · high consistency

Artistic interests center on imagining freely and expressing ideas your own way. Social interests center on teaching, caring and growing alongside others. When both are high, the happiest moments mix the two: drawing a card to cheer up a friend, or using a short sketch to coach a younger club member through a presentation.
Often the meaning lies less in the finished piece than in how the people who see it react and change.
Artistic and Social are adjacent
These two types sit right next to each other on Holland’s hexagon. Both care about feelings and human experience, and both prefer interpretation that fits the situation over one fixed answer. That makes AS a highly consistent pair, and education, counseling and the arts offer many careers that use both interests at once.
Where AS people feel at home
Schools, tutoring centers, counseling services, youth centers, arts foundations and children’s publishing combine people with creative work. Typical tasks include designing a lesson or workshop, adapting activities to the group in front of you and presenting results together. Collaboration counts for more than competition here, and stories count for more than spreadsheets.

AS vs SA: the first letter is the stronger interest
AS puts expression first. Identity as a writer, illustrator or musician comes first, and the wish to help widens how the work is shared, like a picture book author who runs children’s workshops or a musician who trains in music therapy.
SA puts helping first. The goal is a person’s growth, and art is one route there, as for art teachers, play therapists and youth workers. With only a few points between the scores, the fact that both are high matters more than their order.
Third letters: SAE, SAI, ASC
SAE adds an organizer’s energy, pointing to festivals and community arts programs. SAI adds an evidence-based streak, as in art therapy or language teaching. ASC adds polish and structure, which suits editing books or developing teaching materials.
Trying AS for real
Spend a semester on something steady, such as art sessions at a community center, story time at a library or organizing a school show. Jot one line after each session about the best moment. Over time you will see whether making the work or watching people respond lights you up, which is the AS versus SA question. Shadowing a teacher or counselor for a day helps too.
What AS cannot decide for you
Loving expression is not the same as artistic skill, and wanting to help is not the same as handling emotional fatigue well. Interest tests show attraction, not ability. Use the result as a map for wide exploration.
AS and SA codes: common questions
What jobs suit the AS or SA code?
Art teachers, music and play therapists, teaching artists, youth workers and picture book authors all mix expression with care. Whether you would rather work with children or adults changes the best fit, and that varies from person to person.
What is the difference between AS and SA?
The first letter is the stronger interest. AS tends to center on creating and self-expression, SA on helping others grow. Small gaps can flip on a retest, so read both descriptions.
Which majors fit an AS or SA profile?
Art education, music therapy, child development, creative writing, theater and youth studies are good candidates. Check whether a program offers teaching certification and how much fieldwork it includes.
If Artistic and Social are both high, can I pick a single direction?
This pair actually has many careers that use both, so you rarely have to give one up. Teaching, counseling and arts programming all combine them. Try several short experiences to narrow things down.
