The Gi-hae (己亥) day pillar: traits, relationships, work and rest
Gi-hae is yin Earth (己) over the Water branch (亥). Tradition pictures riverside fields soaked by early-winter water, or paddies that hold water through the winter to prepare for spring. Earth governs Water here, but soft field soil mixes easily with water: people born on this day are read as warm and accommodating, and quick to soak up other people’s moods.

Hidden stems are the stems a branch is said to carry inside it, listed from the residual to the main one, each with its ten-god name seen from the day stem. Schools differ on a few branches (子, 午, 申).
The twelve stages describe, like the stages of a life, how strong the day stem is on its own branch. Yin stems are counted backwards here, as in most Korean references, and 戊 and 己 follow 丙 and 丁 (Fire and Earth counted together); some schools count differently.
How tradition pictures Gi-hae
A garden’s soil does not dam a river; it takes the water in and grows fertile. The hidden stems of 亥 are 戊, 甲 and 壬 — Rob Wealth, Direct Officer and Direct Wealth for 己: a colleague who also competes, order kept properly, and savings gathered steadily. In the twelve stages 己 on 亥 is at Conception (胎), a seed that has just come alive underground, with more potential held inside than shown. Because Earth is paired with yellow, 己亥 is also nicknamed the golden pig, a zodiac nickname rather than a promise of money.
Personality, as tradition reads it
Gi-hae people are gentle and put others at ease; they listen to the end, and strangers open up to them. They are good with money and household matters and do their work faithfully by the rules. Stability matters to them, since Direct Wealth is the main stem of the branch, yet like damp soil they absorb requests and feelings easily, take on too much and delay decisions. Before deciding, write: “Not for anyone else — what is best for me?”
Relationships, as tradition reads them
In relationships Gi-hae people offer comfort: shared meals, everyday care, and attention to a partner’s family and friends. Disliking conflict, they adapt first, then quietly wear out from postponed wishes. When planning a date or a weekend, say at least once: “This time, let’s do what I want.” Learning to receive is part of keeping a home together.
This page does not split its reading by gender. Some traditions read the day branch as the partner’s seat, but how a relationship goes depends far more on the people and the situation.
Work and study: where tradition sees a fit
Accounting and finance, HR and office management, teaching and counseling, welfare administration, farming and food: Gi-hae people do well where resources are gathered and people are looked after, and their careful, rule-keeping work earns trust. Helping everyone can bury their own priorities. Each morning write three tasks of your own first, and take requests afterwards.
Stress and rest
Under stress Gi-hae people take on others’ feelings until they feel waterlogged; some find worries trailing into long nights, or reach for sweets and late snacks. Rest that warms and dries helps: walk in daytime sunshine, eat a warm soupy meal, put the phone down once a day to check your own mood, and set time limits with people who drain you.
A growth tip
Take your own side once a day. Before going along with a request or opinion, sum up in one sentence how you feel. Even unspoken, knowing it changes the choice, and a field that knows itself can share its water more generously.
Questions about Gi-hae
What does Conception mean for Gi-hae?
Conception (胎) compares the day stem to a life newly begun, before any sprout shows. It suggests giving plans enough time to prepare rather than rushing results, and it marks room to grow, not weakness.
Why are Gi-hae people called kind and bad at saying no?
Soft soil takes in water rather than blocking it. In the branch, Direct Wealth and Direct Officer add diligence and responsibility, and Rob Wealth a wish to share. Kindness lasts longer with a boundary beside it.
Gi-hae compatibility: which pillars match?
Tradition says 亥 harmonizes with 寅 and forms the Three Harmonies (三合) with 卯 and 未, partners who help each other grow like trees on a field. Two 亥 together form a self-punishment, and it clashes with 巳. Value time spent sharing wishes over any chart.
This page introduces traditional readings of a day pillar and offers questions for reflection. Saju is a long-standing East Asian cultural tradition, not a scientifically validated personality test or a prediction. This page is for entertainment and reflection: the same day pillar comes back every 60 days, so it cannot define a personality or a future.
