The Jeong-yu (丁酉) day pillar: traits, relationships, work and rest
Jeong-yu is yin Fire (丁) over the Metal branch (酉). Tradition pictures a candle lit on an autumn evening, and the silver and gold work glinting under it. A small flame refining precious metal gives people born on this day a sharp eye and delicate hands, along with a perfectionism that notices every flaw.

Hidden stems are the stems a branch is said to carry inside it, listed from the residual to the main one, each with its ten-god name seen from the day stem. Schools differ on a few branches (子, 午, 申).
The twelve stages describe, like the stages of a life, how strong the day stem is on its own branch. Yin stems are counted backwards here, as in most Korean references, and 戊 and 己 follow 丙 and 丁 (Fire and Earth counted together); some schools count differently.
How tradition pictures Jeong-yu
Fire restrains Metal, but a lamp is no furnace: it polishes and reveals rather than melts. The hidden stems of 酉 are 庚 and 辛 — Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth for 丁, only signs of value and tangible results. 酉 is also the hour of dusk when lamps are lit, so 丁 finds its own light here: in the twelve stages it is at Birth (長生), fresh and easily loved. A lamp is fragile in the wind, though, and tradition adds that rough surroundings shake it easily.
Personality, as tradition reads it
Jeong-yu people see small differences others miss. They check material and finish when choosing anything, and they put care into their own work to the last detail; behind a soft voice the standards are clear. The same eye turns on themselves, so a small mistake can be replayed for a long time. At the end of the day, write down one thing you did well enough.
Relationships, as tradition reads them
In love Jeong-yu people show care through detail: the right gift, a space and time prepared with attention, a warmth that is quiet but lasting. High expectations make small lapses sting, and the hurt often shows in a look rather than words. Turn criticism into a request: “When this happens, I’d love it if you…”
This page does not split its reading by gender. Some traditions read the day branch as the partner’s seat, but how a relationship goes depends far more on the people and the situation.
Work and study: where tradition sees a fit
Design and crafts, jewelry, fashion and beauty, editing and proofreading, accounting and financial analysis, quality control: Jeong-yu people shine wherever detail is the value, and budgets are safe with them. Perfection can push past deadlines. Before each task, write down what “good enough” looks like, and ship when you reach it.
Stress and rest
Under stress Jeong-yu sensitivity sharpens: some notice that noise, smells or a messy room grate on them, and they replay mistakes in bed. Shield the flame from the wind: a quiet room with low light, a warm cup of tea, simple handwork such as washing up, knitting or tidying, and a paper book instead of a screen before sleep.
A growth tip
Take a compliment as it is. When someone says you did well, answer only “Thank you,” not “It’s not good enough yet.” Try it for a week. For people stricter with their own flaws than with anyone else’s, being recognized is oil for the lamp.
Questions about Jeong-yu
Is the Birth stage a good sign?
Birth (長生) is the first of the twelve stages: fresh, clear energy with room to grow. 丁 is said to find its light at 酉, the hour of evening lamps. It describes freshness and potential, not the whole chart.
Why are Jeong-yu people called perfectionists?
Under a small flame even the flaws of a jewel show. With only Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth in the branch, visible quality matters to them. Sensitivity turned around is taste.
Jeong-yu compatibility: which pillars match?
Tradition says 酉 harmonizes with 辰 and forms the Three Harmonies (三合) with 巳 and 丑, partners who work well together. Two 酉 together form a self-punishment, each knowing the other’s fussiness too well, and it clashes with 卯. Care counts for more than any table.
This page introduces traditional readings of a day pillar and offers questions for reflection. Saju is a long-standing East Asian cultural tradition, not a scientifically validated personality test or a prediction. This page is for entertainment and reflection: the same day pillar comes back every 60 days, so it cannot define a personality or a future.
