How to read the chart

Find your style in a row and the other person’s in a column, then open the cell where they meet. Each of the 10 pairings, including two people with the same style, covers the pattern that tends to repeat, common misreadings and things to say. It applies to friends and family as well as partners.

  1. Find your style in a row and the other person’s in a column, then open the cell where they meet. Not sure of your style yet? The attachment test can help first.
  2. Cells that differ only in order, such as Anxious × Avoidant and Avoidant × Anxious, open the same page, which explains both sides.
  3. The diagonal covers two people with the same style: what feels easy, and where you may wobble in the same way.

Common questions

Is there a best attachment style pairing?

There is no single best pairing. Research suggests that conflict tends to be easier when at least one person leans secure, but two insecure styles can still build a comfortable relationship by learning each other’s signals and agreeing on small promises. Each cell describes a pattern, not a rank.

Why do anxious and avoidant styles clash so often?

When distance appears, the anxious side tends to move closer to check in, while the avoidant side, feeling pressed, steps back to calm down. The more one reaches, the more the other withdraws. Agreeing in advance on check-ins and time to cool off helps break the loop. The Anxious × Avoidant page goes into detail.

What if we do not know our styles?

Start with the attachment test to see your own tendency. When you suggest it to someone else, say it is about understanding each other, not judging. If a friend shares their result link with you, your own result page can also show a reading for the two of you.

Can an attachment style change?

Yes. A style grows out of past relationship experiences, so it can shift with steadier relationships or by noticing and practicing new responses. The pairings in this chart are a map of how two people meet right now, not a fixed ending.

How should attachment style compatibility be read?

Attachment compatibility is better read as how two people trade distance and reassurance than as a score. As you read a cell, think about how one person responds when the other wants reassurance, and who reaches out first after a conflict. In any pairing, noticing each other’s signals can change a relationship’s rhythm.

What happens when two people share an attachment style?

Two people with the same style tend to understand each other’s reactions easily, but they also tend to wobble in the same direction at the same time. Two Anxious partners may both need reassurance and have little left to offer each other, while two Avoidant partners may feel at ease yet keep postponing deeper conversations. The diagonal cells cover what each style may want to watch for.

This is a self-reflection guide, not a diagnosis. Attachment styles can shift with people and seasons, and they do not decide whether two people are compatible.
