Goegang (魁罡殺): how saju finds it, and common myths

Goegang is a shinsal whose name is said to come from stars of the Big Dipper. Like a star that points the way from the center of the sky, the tradition uses it for decisiveness and an unbending will to lead. It reads as clear judgment and readiness to go first.

Goegang in the tradition

Goegang is set by a whole pillar, read mainly on the day pillar, and every list agrees on 庚辰, 庚戌 and 壬辰: strong metal or water stems sitting on an earth storehouse branch, a picture of firmness pushed to the limit. Old readings described it as extremes, great leadership and stubborn clashes together; modern readings see leadership, decisiveness and persistence that shine brightest when paired with flexibility.

How Goegang is found

Goegang is the name given when one of a few set pillars appears in a chart, mainly as the day pillar. Only the three every list shares are marked here.

The Goegang pillars

  • 庚辰
  • 庚戌
  • 壬辰

Schools split on a fourth (壬戌 in some lists, 戊戌 in others), so only 庚辰, 庚戌 and 壬辰 carry the name here. It is read mainly on the day pillar; some schools look at every pillar.

Worked example: finding Goegang in a chart

Take a made-up person born on May 3, 1998, at 14:30. The same calculation as the free saju reading gives the four pillars below; here is how to find Goegang in them.

The example’s four pillars (Goegang highlighted)
HourDayMonthYear
Stem癸庚丙戊
Branch未Goat戌Dog辰Dragon寅Tiger
  1. Of the four pillars, the day pillar 庚戌 is on the Goegang list.
  2. Tradition weighs Goegang most on the day pillar, which is exactly this case.
  3. The other pillars are not on the list.

The birth date is made up to show the steps. A different birth time changes the hour pillar, and near the start of a solar term the month pillar can change too, so the result can change with them.

What to look at when reading it

Goegang is read first on the day pillar; whether it also counts in the year, month or hour pillar differs by school. When the day pillar is Goegang, the day master and the branch right beneath it form the pillar together, so the trait sits at the center of the character. Goegang pillars in two or more places are read as a stronger note.

Goegang and the terms around it

All three Goegang pillars sit on 辰 or 戌, the earth storehouse branches that can be the Flowery Canopy. On this site’s lists no pillar is both Goegang and White Tiger, so the two names never fall on one pillar. Older readings grouped Goegang with Yangin as strong energies, and with both, what matters is where the strength goes.

Common myths

What people sayGoegang makes someone too strong-willed for relationships.
A calmer readingIt stands for clear judgment and firm views. Used one-sidedly they cause friction; the same strength can also feel like relief when someone takes a hard decision off others’ hands.
What people sayGoegang means a life of extremes.
A calmer readingThat is a dramatic old way of describing strong energy. Choices and circumstances shape a life; Goegang is best read as a habit of pushing whatever one does to the end.
What people sayGoegang means you can never work under someone.
A calmer readingThe old image of a leader’s temperament turned into a verdict on working life. Someone with clear judgment often earns trust in a role with defined responsibilities, so where one works well depends more on the setting and agreements than on temperament.

How tradition says it shows up

People with Goegang dislike leaving things vague and like to reach a conclusion. They often sort out a crisis or take on the decisions others postpone, and they do not nod along to what goes against their principles. Their certainty can make them decide before hearing others out.

Questions about Goegang

What does Goegang mean in saju?

It is a shinsal said to be named after stars of the Big Dipper, standing for decisiveness, firmness and leadership. It is given when a set pillar appears in a chart, mainly as the day pillar.

Which day pillars carry Goegang?

Every list shares three: 庚辰, 庚戌 and 壬辰. Schools disagree on a fourth, so this site gives the name only to those three.

What kind of work suits Goegang?

Tradition links it with leading and deciding. Interest and experience are better guides to a career, and Goegang can show up as taking responsibility in any role.

Are Goegang and White Tiger the same?

No: they are different shinsal, each set by its own list of pillars. Here Goegang is 庚辰, 庚戌 and 壬辰 and White Tiger seven other pillars, with none in common, though both stand for forceful energy.

Shinsal are folk labels people once gave to certain branches and pillars; none of them settles anyone’s future. If someone uses one of these names to sell you a charm or a ritual, you can simply say no.
