Saju glossary · Ten gods

Seven Killings (偏官): what this ten god means in saju

Seven Killings, also called Indirect Officer, is the ten god that restrains your day master with the same polarity. The fierce name made it notorious, yet the tradition pictures pressure that tempers you and the nerve to hold firm in a crisis. It reads as carrying weight and still moving forward.

Seven Killings in the tradition

An element that restrains you tests and governs you. With matching polarity it presses head-on without mercy, so older readings gave it strict discipline, hardship and strong authority. Counting from the day master, it is the seventh stem, hence its other name. Tradition never simply avoided it: controlled by Eating God or channeled through a resource star, its pressure was seen as fuel for great achievement.

How Seven Killings is found

Seven Killings is the stem whose element restrains the day master, with the same polarity (yin or yang). So each day master has exactly one stem that is its Seven Killings.

Each day master’s Seven Killings stem, and the branches holding it as their main hidden stem
Day masterStemBranch (main stem)
甲 Yang Wood庚申 Monkey
乙 Yin Wood辛酉 Rooster
丙 Yang Fire壬亥 Pig
丁 Yin Fire癸子 Rat
戊 Yang Earth甲寅 Tiger
己 Yin Earth乙卯 Rabbit
庚 Yang Metal丙巳 Snake
辛 Yin Metal丁午 Horse
壬 Yang Water戊辰 Dragon · 戌 Dog
癸 Yin Water己丑 Ox · 未 Goat

Branches are read by their main hidden stem. Some readings count the residual and middle hidden stems too, so books can show slightly different counts for the same chart.

Worked example: finding Seven Killings in a chart

Take a made-up person born on September 11, 1990, at 10:30. The same calculation as the free saju reading gives the four pillars below; here is how to find Seven Killings in them.

The example’s four pillars (Seven Killings highlighted)
HourDayMonthYear
Stem己Companion己Self (day master)乙Seven Killings庚Hurting Officer
Branch巳Direct Resource卯Seven Killings酉Eating God午Indirect Resource
  1. The day master is 己, Yin Earth. It stands for the self, and each of the other seven characters is read by how it relates to it.
  2. For a 己 day master, Seven Killings is the stem 乙 and no other; among the branches it is 卯, which holds 乙 as its main hidden stem.
  3. In this chart, Seven Killings sits at the month stem 乙 and day branch 卯 (main stem 乙).
  4. The branch 卯 hides 乙 as its main stem, and 乙 also shows among the stems. A hidden stem that surfaces in the stems is called revealed (透出), and many readings take Seven Killings’s qualities as more visible then.

The birth date is made up to show the steps. A different birth time changes the hour pillar, and near the start of a solar term the month pillar can change too, so the result can change with them.

Common myths

What people saySeven Killings brings accidents and legal trouble.
A calmer readingThe fearsome name dramatizes an element pressing hard on the day master; no character in a chart announces events. Today it is read as resilience under pressure and the resolve to set and keep rules.
What people sayPeople with strong Seven Killings are harsh and aggressive.
A calmer readingIts strictness more often points inwards: high standards for oneself and trouble putting responsibility down.
What people sayIn a woman’s chart, Seven Killings stands for a difficult spouse.
A calmer readingReading the officer stars as a spouse by gender reflects marriage customs of the past, when families arranged far more than today. It says nothing factual about whom anyone meets or how a relationship goes.

How tradition says it shows up

People with strong Seven Killings often think more clearly under tension. They step forward when someone has to decide and do not back off a hard task until it is done. Because they push themselves, rest may not feel restful, and feeling that every break has to be earned is a sign the pressure has turned from fuel into load.

Something to try this week

This week, put one rest in your calendar that has nothing to do with results. Watching where your mind wanders during it helps you tell the pressure that builds you from the pressure that wears you out.

Questions about Seven Killings

What does Seven Killings mean in saju?

It is the ten god for an element that restrains the day master, with the same polarity. Also called Indirect Officer, it symbolizes pressure and hardship, and the backbone and responsibility that grow from them.

How is Seven Killings different from Direct Officer?

Both restrain the day master. Seven Killings shares its polarity and reads as unbending pressure; Direct Officer has the opposite polarity and reads as agreed rules and order.

Is a lot of Seven Killings bad?

Tradition speaks of balance rather than bad luck: when it weighs too much, Eating God or resource stars steady the chart. In daily life, that means sharing the load and keeping a habit of rest.
