Direct Resource (正印): what this ten god means in saju

Direct Resource names the element that produces your day master, paired with the opposite polarity. Read literally it is an upright seal, and the tradition places here the care that shelters you and learning built step by step into qualifications. It reads as the ability to take things in and make them your own.

Direct Resource in the tradition

With opposite polarity, the support flows in gently. Older readings tied Direct Resource to scholarship, documents and recognized credentials, and to the elders who protect you. It is also the bridge that takes pressure from the officer stars and passes it on as growth, which tradition valued highly; too much of it, on the other hand, was read as receiving without moving.

How Direct Resource is found

Direct Resource is the stem whose element produces the day master, with the opposite polarity (yin or yang). So each day master has exactly one stem that is its Direct Resource.

Each day master’s Direct Resource stem, and the branches holding it as their main hidden stem
Day masterStemBranch (main stem)
甲 Yang Wood癸子 Rat
乙 Yin Wood壬亥 Pig
丙 Yang Fire乙卯 Rabbit
丁 Yin Fire甲寅 Tiger
戊 Yang Earth丁午 Horse
己 Yin Earth丙巳 Snake
庚 Yang Metal己丑 Ox · 未 Goat
辛 Yin Metal戊辰 Dragon · 戌 Dog
壬 Yang Water辛酉 Rooster
癸 Yin Water庚申 Monkey

Branches are read by their main hidden stem. Some readings count the residual and middle hidden stems too, so books can show slightly different counts for the same chart.

Worked example: finding Direct Resource in a chart

Take a made-up person born on August 23, 2000, at 10:30. The same calculation as the free saju reading gives the four pillars below; here is how to find Direct Resource in them.

The example’s four pillars (Direct Resource highlighted)
HourDayMonthYear
Stem丁Indirect Wealth癸Self (day master)甲Hurting Officer庚Direct Resource
Branch巳Direct Wealth丑Seven Killings申Direct Resource辰Direct Officer
  1. The day master is 癸, Yin Water. It stands for the self, and each of the other seven characters is read by how it relates to it.
  2. For a 癸 day master, Direct Resource is the stem 庚 and no other; among the branches it is 申, which holds 庚 as its main hidden stem.
  3. In this chart, Direct Resource sits at the year stem 庚 and month branch 申 (main stem 庚).
  4. The branch 申 hides 庚 as its main stem, and 庚 also shows among the stems. A hidden stem that surfaces in the stems is called revealed (透出), and many readings take Direct Resource’s qualities as more visible then.
  5. The month branch holds the season of birth, and many readings set the chart’s overall frame (格) from its main hidden stem, so Direct Resource in this place weighs more than elsewhere.

The birth date is made up to show the steps. A different birth time changes the hour pillar, and near the start of a solar term the month pillar can change too, so the result can change with them.

What to look at when reading it

Direct Resource weighs most in the month branch, where many readings take it as the frame of the whole chart. When the same stem shows among the stems and also sits in a branch as its main hidden stem, the urge to learn reads as visible to others; held only in a branch, it works more quietly. Three or four resource stars together read as more support than the day master can use, so readers check whether Eating God or Hurting Officer gives it a way out.

Direct Resource and the terms around it

Direct Officer produces Direct Resource, and Direct Resource produces the day master: tradition called this flow officer and seal supporting each other, and prized it as pressure turned into growth. Direct Wealth restrains Direct Resource, so strong wealth stars can push study aside for practical demands. Direct Resource in turn restrains Hurting Officer, read as polishing sharp words. Indirect Resource is its twin of the same element with the other polarity.

Common myths

What people sayDirect Resource means good grades and passed exams.
A calmer readingIt is called the star of learning because it stands for absorbing and digesting. Results come from methods, time and circumstances; the ten god only colors how much you enjoy learning.
What people sayToo much Direct Resource makes people lazy and dependent.
A calmer readingOlder readings worried about balance, receiving outweighing acting. More often it is simply caution: wanting to understand fully before moving.
What people sayWithout Direct Resource, you lack care or a head for study.
A calmer readingA ten god missing from the stems and main hidden stems may still sit among the other hidden stems, and Indirect Resource can fill the same place of learning. Care and study grow from the people and settings you meet along the way, so an absent character does not leave that part of life empty.

How tradition says it shows up

People with strong Direct Resource like to study before they start: books, courses, advice from someone they trust. Once convinced, they follow through steadily, and their calm makes them people others lean on. Waiting until they feel fully prepared can delay the first step.
