Yangin (羊刃殺): how saju finds it, and common myths
Yangin is a shinsal whose name compares it to a blade. Like a well-honed knife, the tradition uses it for strength sharp enough to be almost too much, and for a refusal to back down. It marks the branch where the day master is at its most powerful.
Yangin in the tradition
Yangin is the branch where the day master reaches its peak in the twelve stages. This site counts it for yang day masters only, so each has exactly one Yangin branch; the day pillars that are Yangin themselves, 丙午, 戊午 and 壬子, are also called the day blade. Old readings compared it to a general holding a sword: too much force can cut, but with a strict star such as Seven Killings at its side, it was said to win great merit.
How Yangin is found
Yangin is the branch where the day master is at its peak (the twelve stages’ 帝旺). Only yang day masters are marked.
| Day master | Yangin |
|---|---|
| 甲 Yang Wood | 卯 Rabbit |
| 丙 Yang Fire | 午 Horse |
| 戊 Yang Earth | 午 Horse |
| 庚 Yang Metal | 酉 Rooster |
| 壬 Yang Water | 子 Rat |
Schools disagree on Yangin for yin day masters, so none is shown. The day pillars that are themselves Yangin (丙午, 戊午, 壬子) are also called the “day blade”.
Worked example: finding Yangin in a chart
Take a made-up person born on June 13, 1999, at 16:30. The same calculation as the free saju reading gives the four pillars below; here is how to find Yangin in them.
| Hour | Day | Month | Year | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 丙 | 丙 | 庚 | 己 |
| Branch | 申Monkey | 申Monkey | 午Horse | 卯Rabbit |
- The day master is 丙, Yang Fire. It stands for the self, and each of the other seven characters is read by how it relates to it.
- The day master 丙 is yang, and the branch of its peak stage (帝旺) among the twelve stages is 午. 午 sits in the month pillar, so the chart is read as carrying Yangin.
The birth date is made up to show the steps. A different birth time changes the hour pillar, and near the start of a solar term the month pillar can change too, so the result can change with them.
What to look at when reading it
With the Yangin branch in the month branch, the day master peaks from the season of birth itself, and older readings called this a Yangin frame. In the day branch it is the day blade mentioned above; in the year or hour branch its force works from further away. Readers also check for Seven Killings to discipline that strength and for a branch clashing with the Yangin branch.
Yangin and the terms around it
Yangin and Seven Killings are read as a pair: a chart holding both is called Yangin harnessing the killings, and when the stem inside the Yangin branch combines with Seven Killings, the structure has a name of its own, Yangin combining with the killings. The main stem hidden in the Yangin branch is Rob Wealth for the yang day masters with one exception: for 戊, that stem is 丁, which is Direct Resource. As a sign of forceful energy, it is often introduced alongside Goegang and White Tiger.
Common myths
- What people sayYangin means you will be hurt by a blade.
- A calmer readingThe blade is a metaphor for force, not a forecast about your body. Physical safety and health belong to daily habits and medical care, not to a character in a chart.
- What people sayYangin means a violent temper.
- A calmer readingIts strength more often shows up as pride that does not bend easily and a will to finish. When it feels harsh, slowing the pace of what you say changes a lot.
- What people sayYangin is a bad shinsal; better not to have it.
- A calmer readingOld readings saw Yangin both ways: added strength for a weak day master, and great deeds when a disciplining energy is near. What matters is where that strength is directed, not a verdict of good or bad.
How tradition says it shows up
People with Yangin tend to hate losing and to gather all their strength once they have a goal. They would rather solve things themselves than lean on others and often shine where there is competition. They can also forget how to relax and stay tense, so keeping one activity that is purely for fun helps.

What does Yangin mean in saju?
It is a shinsal named after a blade, given when the branch where the day master peaks appears in a chart. It stands for pride, competitiveness and drive.
How do I find Yangin in my chart?
For a yang day master, Yangin is the branch where that stem peaks; if any pillar has it, the chart carries Yangin. Schools differ on yin day masters, so none is shown for them.
Is Yangin the same as Rob Wealth?
They are close: for most yang day masters the main hidden stem of the Yangin branch is Rob Wealth, so books often describe Yangin as a very strong Rob Wealth. Yangin, though, is about a branch position.
What is a Yangin frame?
A Yangin frame is a chart whose month branch is the Yangin branch. The day master peaks from the season of birth, so older readings looked closely for Seven Killings or Direct Officer to discipline that strength.
Shinsal are folk labels people once gave to certain branches and pillars; none of them settles anyone’s future. If someone uses one of these names to sell you a charm or a ritual, you can simply say no.
