How to read the table
Read across from the sign in a row to the sign in a column; the table is symmetric. Cell colours show the four kinds of cell below.
- Green: a triangle of affinity or the Six Harmonies (said to suit each other)
- Pink: a clash, resentment, punishment, harm or break, with no triangle or Six Harmonies (said to rub)
- Grey: only the same season, or no named relation (easy-going)
- Yellow: the same sign
- Triangle of affinity (三合)
- Triangle of affinity (三合): 申子辰, 亥卯未, 寅午戌 and 巳酉丑, three signs each, read as companions facing the same way.
- Six Harmonies (六合)
- Six Harmonies (六合): 子丑, 寅亥, 卯戌, 辰酉, 巳申 and 午未, pairs that draw each other in.
- Same season (方合)
- Same season (方合): 寅卯辰 spring, 巳午未 summer, 申酉戌 autumn and 亥子丑 winter; familiar and comfortable, sometimes too alike.
- Clash (沖)
- Clash (沖): 子午, 丑未, 寅申, 卯酉, 辰戌 and 巳亥, the six pairs facing each other across the circle; attraction and friction at once.
- Resentment (怨嗔)
- Resentment (怨嗔): 子未, 丑午, 寅酉, 卯申, 辰亥 and 巳戌, pairs where small hurts are said to pile up unspoken.
- Punishment (刑)
- Punishment (刑): the groups 寅巳申 and 丑戌未, and the pair 子卯; trying to correct each other can sharpen words.
- Harm (害)
- Harm (害): 子未, 丑午, 寅巳, 卯辰, 申亥 and 酉戌, pairs said to drift apart quietly when they are close.
- Break (破)
- Break (破): 子酉, 丑辰, 寅亥, 卯午, 巳申 and 未戌, pairs whose shared plans are said to come apart easily.
- Self-punishment (自刑)
- Self-punishment (自刑): 辰, 午, 酉 and 亥 meeting their own branch; so alike that each sees the other’s weak spots.

How to read zodiac compatibility
Zodiac compatibility is one of the oldest and simplest ways Korean tradition compares two people: it looks at how the earthly branches of their birth years relate. Triangles of affinity and the Six Harmonies read as easy partnerships; clashes, resentment, punishment, harm and breaks as relations that rub; a shared season as familiar ground.
Every relation in the table is computed from the traditional branch tables. The names are symbols, though: how two people treat each other matters far more.
It looks at the birth year only, so the same pair of signs plays out differently for every two people. Use the names as a starting point for conversation.
Signs said to rub are not “wrong” for each other: they move at different speeds. Knowing that in advance makes it easier to choose your words.
Pairs with both a shared season and harm, like 卯辰 and 酉戌, are grouped with those that rub; pairs with the Six Harmonies plus a break or punishment, like 寅亥 and 巳申, with those that suit.
The sign changes at Ipchun, around 4 February. If you were born in January or early February, check your sign’s page for the exact dates.
Zodiac compatibility: common questions
Which signs are the best match?
Tradition counts triangles of affinity and the Six Harmonies as the easiest relations. The triangles are 申子辰 (Monkey, Rat, Dragon), 亥卯未 (Pig, Rabbit, Goat), 寅午戌 (Tiger, Horse, Dog) and 巳酉丑 (Snake, Rooster, Ox); the harmonies pair signs such as Rat and Ox or Tiger and Pig. That gives every sign three signs said to suit it.
Is a resentment pair really a bad match?
Resentment (wonjin) names six pairs: Rat and Goat, Ox and Horse, Tiger and Rooster, Rabbit and Monkey, Dragon and Pig, Snake and Dog. Old texts used harsh words for it; today it reads as a hint that small hurts can pile up. Saying them early and briefly is usually enough.
Does the sign change on January 1 or at the lunar new year?
Neither: in saju it changes at Ipchun, usually 3 to 5 February. Born in January or before Ipchun in February, you belong to the previous year’s sign.
How is this different from saju compatibility?
Zodiac compatibility compares the birth-year branch only. Saju compatibility uses both full birth dates: day masters, day branches and the balance of the five elements.
This page introduces traditional relations between the zodiac signs, for fun and reflection. Zodiac compatibility is a long-standing East Asian cultural tradition, not a scientifically validated prediction. This page does not promise how any relationship will turn out. Rather than deciding anything by a sign, talk things through with each other.
