Ox compatibility: the signs that click and the signs that clash

The Ox’s branch, 丑, is the frozen earth at the end of winter, between 1 and 3 a.m. Tradition reads it as patience and quiet reliability, so its matches weigh lasting trust over sparks.

The Ox and the other eleven signs

These relations come from the traditional tables of the twelve earthly branches. The names are symbols for how two people tend to meet; they do not decide whether a relationship works. The character sketches of each sign are tradition’s pictures too, not a description of the people born in that year.

Signs said to suit the Ox

Linked by a triangle of affinity or the Six Harmonies.

The Ox forms the 巳酉丑 triangle of affinity with the Snake and the Rooster, a group that polishes a goal until it is done. The Rat is its Six Harmonies partner and winter neighbour: the Rat opens the conversation, the Ox finishes the job. Even here, tradition pictures the Ox carrying everything alone, so ask for help early.

Signs said to rub against the Ox

A clash, resentment, punishment, harm or break, with no triangle or Six Harmonies.

The Goat meets the Ox in a clash (丑未) with a punishment on top: two stubborn earths that can hold out for a long time, so agree on a pause before a conclusion. With the Horse, resentment and harm both apply; the Horse’s speed can feel careless and the Ox’s silence heavy. The Dog shares a punishment (丑戌) and the Dragon a break (丑辰): hear the Dog’s principles first, and write down plans made with the Dragon.

Signs read as neutral for the Ox

Only the same season, or no named relation at all.

The Pig shares the Ox’s winter season (亥子丑), a quiet and familiar ease. The Tiger, the Rabbit and the Monkey have no named relation with the Ox, so small promises kept are what build trust.

Two people born under the Ox, as tradition reads it

Two Oxen trust each other quickly and keep their word, but both tend to keep complaints to themselves. Set a regular moment to ask what feels heavy lately.

In the end, compatibility is how you treat each other

Zodiac compatibility looks at one thing only: the year each person was born. Two people with the same pair of signs can get along in completely different ways, so how you listen and how you make up after a disagreement matters far more than any name in the table. For a fuller picture, try a saju reading with both birth dates, or the personality-based pages below.

Ox compatibility: common questions

Which signs suit the Ox?

The Snake and the Rooster (the 巳酉丑 triangle of affinity) and the Rat (子丑, Six Harmonies).

Why are the Ox and the Goat said to clash?

Their branches clash (丑未) and both belong to the 丑戌未 punishment group: two firm wills facing each other. Deciding in advance who steps back first helps.

Are the Ox and the Horse a resentment pair?

Yes: 丑午 is both resentment and harm. Tradition gives them different speeds, so agree first on how quickly a decision is needed.

Is someone born in January 1985 an Ox?

No. Ipchun fell on February 4 in 1985, so January births belong to the Rat; the 乙丑 Ox year starts at Ipchun.

Ox birth years (from Ipchun)

In the saju calendar the sign changes at Ipchun, the start of spring (around 4 February), not on January 1. The Ox covers births from each Ipchun below to the day before the next one.

Born between January 1 and February 3, 1985? Then the sign is the previous year’s Rat, while someone born between January 1 and February 3, 1986 still counts as an Ox.

Births 1925–2021; the sign starts at that year’s Ipchun

  • 1925 乙丑 · from February 4
  • 1937 丁丑 · from February 4
  • 1949 己丑 · from February 4
  • 1961 辛丑 · from February 4
  • 1973 癸丑 · from February 4
  • 1985 乙丑 · from February 4
  • 1997 丁丑 · from February 4
  • 2009 己丑 · from February 4
  • 2021 辛丑 · from February 3

Born on Ipchun day itself? The sign then depends on the exact time of Ipchun. Dates are in Korea Standard Time.
