VIA character strength
Appreciation of beauty
You notice beauty and excellence and let them refresh you.
- #Transcendence
One of the 24 VIA character strengths, under the virtue of Transcendence. Strengths that connect you to a larger meaning and enrich your life.
How it shows up
- Even small moments can move you and help you refocus.
- Your eye for beauty can feed your creativity and well-being.
- The busier you are, the more it helps to set aside time on purpose to enjoy things.
Ways to use this strength
- Once a day, spend just 30 seconds noticing something beautiful around you.
- Save good moments as photos or notes; over time, they add up.
- Saying out loud what you admire makes the good feeling even stronger.
When overused
If you linger too long just taking things in, everyday tasks can pile up, so keep it short and frequent.

Noticing beauty and excellence in everyday life
This strength is being moved not only by nature and art but also by someone’s skill or goodness. You stop on the way home for a sunset, replay a video of a craftsperson at work, or feel a lump in your throat watching a stranger’s kindness.
In relationships your compliments are specific because you notice what is good in people. At work you care about polish, from a clean report layout to elegant code. In study a brilliant lecture or a well-written book can energize you for days.
When awe runs high or dries up
Seen through Niemiec’s framing, overuse can look like fussiness that accepts only perfection, or a quiet snobbery toward other tastes. Chasing a beautiful result may also cost deadlines. Underused, a busy routine buries the good things around you and days go flat.
A balance point: high standards, generous eyes. Pursue quality in your own work, and look for something admirable even in someone else’s clumsy first attempt.
Sharpening your eye for beauty
Seligman and colleagues (2005) had people pick one top strength and apply it somewhere unfamiliar every day for a week. The paper described the effects as “moderate” or larger, but it relied on online volunteers, and follow-up work has at times found the exercise no better than comparison activities. So watch whether life feels a little richer rather than expecting a dramatic lift.
Ideas: photograph one beautiful scene on your commute each day, tell a coworker exactly what impressed you about their work, visit an exhibition or concert once a month, or listen to a favorite piece of music start to finish without doing anything else.
An eye for excellence, on a cover letter and at interview
“I am sensitive to aesthetics” is vague; show how an eye for excellence raised quality. A cover letter line: “For our club’s campaign, I analyzed twenty strong examples from other groups, wrote down design principles, and sign-ups rose compared with last year.”
Interview questions about role models or work that inspired you let this strength show naturally. For a weakness: “Polishing has squeezed my schedule before, so I now define ‘good enough’ before I start.”
Strengths that pair with appreciation of beauty
With creativity, what moves you becomes material for your own work. Gratitude turns beautiful moments into lasting thankfulness, and love of learning pulls you deeper into fields that impress you. If perseverance is low, admiration may stop short of action; try recreating one piece you admire.
Where this strength sits in the VIA-IS, and the debate
The 2004 handbook by Peterson and Seligman gives the full name as “appreciation of beauty and excellence,” placed under transcendence. It includes feeling uplifted by other people’s good deeds.
In factor analyses it sometimes clusters with inquisitive strengths such as creativity and curiosity rather than transcendence, so its placement is debated. Check your rank on the VIA strengths survey and read VIA alongside Holland interests for career ideas.
Appreciation of beauty as a character strength: common questions
Is appreciation of beauty only for artists?
No. It covers being moved by nature, skill and goodness, so it appears in every line of work. What moves people varies widely.
What careers suit this strength?
Design, architecture, curation, editing and quality roles, where spotting excellence matters, are natural fits. A strength alone cannot choose a career, so look at interests too.
Does a low score mean I lack sensitivity?
No. VIA ranks your strengths against each other, and this one tends to get less use in busy seasons.
Does feeling awe make people happier?
Some studies link awe in nature or art with better mood, but the effect varies from person to person. Start with something you enjoy rather than a chore.
