VIA character strength
Leadership
You can set a direction, bring people together, and turn plans into action.
- #Justice
One of the 24 VIA character strengths, under the virtue of Justice. Strengths that keep communities fair and healthy.
How it shows up
- When things are unclear, you can step in and suggest what to do next.
- When you sort out roles and priorities, the team moves faster.
- Leadership starts with clarity, not control.
Ways to use this strength
- In meetings, sum up three things: the goal, the decision, and the next step.
- Before you decide, take a moment to hear the concerns of everyone it affects.
- Being clear about who decides and who’s responsible eases the pressure.
When overused
Trying to lead everything can wear you out, so hand some things off.

Leadership without a title: everyday examples
In VIA terms, leadership is organizing people so things get done while keeping relationships in good shape. It is the friend who splits up lodging and routes when a trip plan stalls, or the relative who quietly sorts out who brings what to a family gathering.
At work you may be the one who runs the first meeting of a project and puts goals and roles on one page. In school you draft the group timeline. Because others expect you to decide, this strength can also wear you out.
When leadership is overused or held back
From Niemiec’s perspective, more is not better; the right amount depends on the setting. Overused, leadership becomes making every call alone or leaving no room for others to step up, which reads as bossy. Underused, you hang back when the group clearly needs direction and let it drift.
A quick check: “Should I lead here, or help someone else lead?” In low-stakes groups, deliberately hand the facilitation to another person.
Practical ideas for building leadership
Seligman et al. (2005) asked people to use one of their five highest strengths in a novel way every day for a week. The first study found lasting gains in happiness, but later studies with similar designs sometimes found smaller differences from control activities. Test it on your own routine.
Try closing a meeting by restating decisions and owners, explaining the “why” when you delegate, introducing a newcomer to the group, or praising one specific team win. Note how people respond.
Leadership examples that land in a cover letter or at interview
Listing a title makes every application sound alike. Show the situation, the direction you set, how you moved people and the result: “When our festival booth fell behind, I split the work into three streams with a ten-minute daily check-in, and we finished setup a day early.”
Interviewers often ask about a leadership mistake. Something like “I once decided alone and met pushback, so now I gather input twice before a decision” shows learning and a changed habit.
Strengths that complement leadership
With teamwork high, you lead by walking alongside rather than pulling from the front. Humility helps you give credit away and build trust, and perspective lets you offer the bigger picture beyond this week’s deadline. If prudence is low, ask a careful colleague to argue the other side before big calls.
How far to trust a leadership score
The VIA-IS grew out of the classification Peterson and Seligman published in 2004; the original version had 240 items, and shorter revisions are now common. Leadership falls under justice.
Researchers disagree on how closely self-reported leadership matches actual leader behavior, and on whether six virtues separate cleanly. Use your VIA test result as a starting point, and see VIA versus RIASEC to line it up with interests.
Leadership as a character strength: common questions
If leadership is a top strength, do I have to become a manager?
No. The strength is a tendency to gather people and set direction, and it works from any seat. The role that suits you varies from person to person.
Can introverts have leadership as a strength?
Yes. Character strengths are distinct from extraversion, and leading by listening and summarizing is still leadership. Styles vary widely.
Does a low leadership score mean I would struggle as a manager?
A VIA rank on its own cannot predict job fit. Plenty of managers lean on fairness, teamwork or social intelligence instead.
How is leadership different from teamwork?
Teamwork is doing your part as a member; leadership is organizing the whole group and setting its course. Both sit under justice, and some people score high on both.
