VIA character strength
Honesty
You aim to be genuine and consistent in your actions.
- #Courage
One of the 24 VIA character strengths, under the virtue of Courage. Strengths of pushing toward goals despite difficulty.
How it shows up
- You’d rather speak honestly than exaggerate.
- That helps you build relationships and teamwork on trust.
- Still, it’s important to choose your words so your honesty doesn’t hurt.
Ways to use this strength
- When you give feedback, say what you noticed, how it affected things, and what you suggest.
- When you don’t know, say “I don’t know yet” and explain how and when you’ll find out.
- Make fewer promises, and keep the ones you make.
When overused
If your honesty comes across as bluntness, relationships can grow tense.

Honesty as a strength is more than not lying
VIA honesty covers telling the truth, but also authenticity and integrity: being the same person inside and out and keeping your word. It is offering to fix a mistake in a report before anyone notices, or presenting yourself online much as you are offline.
Friends learn that you do not say “it’s fine” lightly, and that what you say can be trusted. In group projects you do not inflate your share, and when studying you do not nod along to what you did not understand.
Honesty overused and underused
Niemiec (2019) calls a strength used to the degree the situation needs its golden mean. Overused, honesty delivers blunt truths when the other person is not ready, or treats every small flexibility as hypocrisy. “I’m just being honest” can become an excuse for careless words.
Underused, it agrees to things you do not mean to avoid conflict, or shapes itself to other people’s expectations. Over time that tends to leave a sense of emptiness.
Practising honesty in new ways
Using a top strength in unfamiliar ways was presented by Seligman and colleagues (2005) as an intervention that lifted happiness. It was a single study, and some later trials found results close to those of a similar comparison task.
Try “gentle candour” once a day: separate fact from feeling, as in “the meeting moved (fact) and I felt thrown (feeling)”. At night, briefly ask whether you acted against your values at any point.
Making honesty a strength in your cover letter and interview
Honesty is hard for an interviewer to verify, so a scene helps. Cover letter example: “I found that a stock-count error came from my own data entry, reported it right away and proposed a double-check step so it did not happen again.”
When asked about weaknesses, name something you are actually working on rather than a polished non-weakness. Keeping your cover letter and interview answers consistent is the most basic proof of the strength.
Strengths that keep honesty balanced
Kindness and social intelligence tell you when and how to say the frank thing. Bravery helps you say uncomfortable truths, and fairness applies principles by the same standard to everyone.
Careers built on trust, such as audit, quality, journalism or research ethics, draw on it; the Conventional interest type can suggest specific roles.
Honesty and the limits of VIA research
Peterson and Seligman’s 2004 list puts honesty under the virtue of Courage, reflecting the idea that staying authentic can take nerve. The VIA-IS measures it alongside the other 23.
A known limit of self-report is that wanting to appear honest can colour the answers. Factor analyses do not reproduce the virtue structure cleanly, which keeps it debated, so use the results as reference material.
Honesty as a character strength: common questions
What does honesty mean as a VIA strength?
Truthfulness plus authenticity: acting as yourself without pretence and keeping promises. The settings where it stands out vary from person to person.
What jobs suit the honesty strength?
Audit, finance, legal work, journalism and research, where trust underpins results. One strength alone cannot decide a job; the RIASEC interest test and the guide to interest and strengths tests help.
People say my honesty hurts them. What can I do?
Often the timing and delivery matter more than the content. Ask whether now is a good moment and share observations and feelings rather than verdicts; that tends to soften things.
Do white lies mean honesty is not my strength?
There is no single answer. Honest people also choose words with care, and what counts as acceptable differs across cultures and relationships. Read your VIA character strengths test result as an overall tendency.
