VIA character strength
Kindness
With small acts of kindness, you lift people up and ease the mood around you.
- #Humanity
One of the 24 VIA character strengths, under the virtue of Humanity. Strengths of caring for and connecting with others.
How it shows up
- You naturally do things that lighten other people’s load.
- Kindness lays the groundwork for trust and cooperation.
- It’s important to set limits on how much you help so you can keep it up.
Ways to use this strength
- When you offer help, say how much you can realistically do.
- On busy days, a tiny kindness, like one sincere compliment, is enough.
- Remember that kindness goes both ways; accepting help is part of it too.
When overused
Too much kindness can leave you drained or make things one-sided, so practice saying no.

Kindness: helping without keeping score
VIA kindness is doing favours and good deeds for others without expecting a return, and it bundles generosity, care and compassion. Holding the lift, inviting a new hire to lunch, or quietly taking on part of a sick colleague’s workload are typical.
When a friend shares bad news, you may ask whether they have eaten before offering solutions. In study groups you share your notes freely, and explaining things to others often deepens your own understanding.
Kindness too much or too little
Niemiec’s (2019) golden mean says more is not automatically better; each strength has a fitting amount. Too much kindness offers help nobody asked for, or cannot say no, so your own work and rest keep slipping. Caring for everyone except yourself is overuse as well.
Too little lets busyness walk you past people in difficulty, or makes helping feel like a calculation. If tiredness has worn your kindness down, looking after yourself first is how balance returns.
Fresh ideas for practising kindness
The Seligman et al. (2005) experiment, in which participants spent a week finding novel uses for one of their signature strengths, is a classic of positive psychology. It reported higher happiness, while replications found the gap with comparison tasks small, so keep expectations moderate.
Try invisible kindness: tidy a shared space unnoticed, or send an anonymous coffee voucher to someone you are grateful to. Choosing one kind act toward yourself each day also helps the strength last.
Presenting kindness as a work skill in a cover letter and interview
Link kindness to outcomes so it reads as more than being nice. Cover letter example: “At my café job I noticed a route that was awkward for wheelchair users, suggested a new seating layout and received thank-you notes from regular customers.”
For a question like “what if a coworker dumps tasks on you?”, describe helping while negotiating priorities and limits instead of promising to help with everything. That shows care and judgment together.
How kindness fits with other strengths
With social intelligence, you notice the help someone actually wants. Fairness extends your care beyond friends to people who are left out, and self-regulation paces it so you do not burn out.
It resembles Big Five agreeableness, but agreeableness is a broad trait and kindness a specific behavioural strength.
The evidence behind kindness
Kindness sits under Humanity in Peterson and Seligman’s 2004 scheme. Experiments in which people performed kind acts or spent money on others found small rises in happiness, with modest effect sizes overall.
The VIA-IS has been translated into many languages, but its six-virtue frame is not cleanly reproduced in factor analyses and remains debated. For career links, the comparison of interest and strengths tests is a good next read.
