How it shows up

  • You tune in to how people feel and make time to stay close.
  • With steady relationships in your life, you bounce back and grow more easily.
  • It helps to practice staying close to people while still keeping your own boundaries.

Ways to use this strength

  • Tell someone close to you one specific thing you appreciated.
  • Get into the habit of reaching out often, even if only briefly.
  • When conflict comes up, have a short talk about it instead of avoiding it.

When overused

If you pour too much into a relationship, you may put yourself last or take on too much responsibility.

Love as a strength: close relationships of every kind

VIA love is not romance alone. It is valuing close relationships in which care is shared both ways. The two-way part matters: receiving help and affection comfortably is as much a part of it as giving them.

Day to day it is remembering an old friend’s birthday, or keeping one dinner free for family or housemates in a busy week. At work it builds deep trust that makes a team feel safe, and in a study group the bonds between people keep everyone going.

Love overused and underused

Niemiec (2019) names the point of using a strength in tune with the situation the golden mean. Overused, this strength pours every bit of energy into relationships and pushes your own needs aside, or opens up too quickly to someone you just met. Carrying another person’s feelings as your responsibility is close to overuse.

Underused, it keeps distance for fear of getting hurt and finds asking for help hard. That differs from simply enjoying time alone; it is when you want closeness but keep the door shut.

New ways to express love in close relationships

In the Seligman et al. (2005) trial, a week of applying a top strength differently each day was followed by greater happiness. Later studies have not consistently reproduced the effect, so take it as a small experiment.

Choose a form of expression you rarely use. If words come easily, write a card by hand; if you usually do the caring, ask for help once. Twenty phone-free minutes spent only listening is good practice too. The love language test can show what the other person welcomes.

Talking about relational strength in a cover letter or interview

Saying “love is my strength” can sound odd at an interview. Translate it into work language, such as building deep, trusting relationships. Cover letter example: “Handling one client account for a year, I kept regular check-in calls and helped raise the renewal rate.”

If asked about conflict, describe the conversation you had to protect the relationship. Adding a time you set a boundary shows balance rather than a wish to please everyone.

Strengths to use alongside love

If kindness is warmth even toward strangers, love is the depth of lasting bonds; together they make a wide and deep network. Social intelligence helps read the other person, and forgiveness repairs things after a quarrel.

Careers where relationships are the work, such as counselling, care and education, connect with it, especially next to a Social interest.

Research on love as a strength, with caveats

In the 2004 Peterson and Seligman classification, love belongs to the virtue of Humanity, and Park et al. (2004) found it among the strengths most associated with life satisfaction, in line with other work linking good relationships to well-being.

Still, the VIA-IS is a self-report and does not measure the actual quality of relationships. Factor analyses give mixed support for the six virtues. Pair the result with other views, such as VIA read next to RIASEC.

Love as a character strength: common questions

Does the VIA strength of love mean being good at dating?

No. It is valuing close, two-way relationships with friends, family and colleagues. Which relationships bring it out differs from person to person.

What jobs suit the love strength?

Counselling, nursing, teaching and client relationship roles depend on deep trust. Trust-building spans many fields, so narrow them down with the career interest test.

How are the love and kindness strengths different?

Kindness is warmth offered to anyone, strangers included; love leans toward giving and receiving affection with people you have known a long time. Which one stands out more varies by individual.

Love is a low strength for me. Am I cold?

Not necessarily. The VIA character strengths test ranks your strengths against one another, and quiet ways of showing care tend to score lower.
