Find your signature strengths with the VIA test

One of the 24 VIA character strengths, under the virtue of Wisdom. Strengths of learning, thinking and finding new ways.

How it shows up

  • In complicated situations, you can pick out what really matters.
  • You take into account the context and long-term effects that others may miss.
  • Without concrete next steps, even a good idea may never get off the ground.

Ways to use this strength

  • When you give advice, offer the main point in one line, plus one next step.
  • When there’s conflict, start by making the shared goal clear.
  • Pick one issue that needs a long view, and keep notes on it.

When overused

If you only talk about the big picture, people may feel it’s out of touch, so add some concrete examples.

Perspective: why people come to you for advice

In VIA terms, perspective is less about knowing a lot and more about tying experiences together, seeing the big picture and offering counsel others find useful. If friends bring you their job or relationship dilemmas and leave saying things feel clearer, this strength may be high for you.

At work it brings a meeting lost in detail back to the original problem. When studying, you may need the overall structure of a subject before individual chapters make sense.

When perspective is too strong or too faint

Niemiec (2019) calls the balance point between overuse and underuse the golden mean. Too much perspective means unrequested advice, or lessons offered before the other person has finished describing how they feel. Frequent “in my experience” can make a conversation one-sided.

Too little, and daily tasks crowd out meaning and priorities. Holding back a well-considered view because “who am I to say” is underuse as well.

A week of using perspective differently

Seligman and colleagues (2005) found that people who used a top strength in a fresh way each day reported higher happiness and lower low-mood scores than a comparison group. Later studies did not consistently find large effects, so try it with modest expectations.

For perspective, ask three questions before giving any advice. Each evening, write one sentence about what the day taught you, or talk with someone a decade older or younger and listen for how they see things.

Perspective in cover letters and interviews

In a cover letter, perspective is an example of seeing the big picture and setting direction: “When our capstone project drifted into adding features, I reshared the user interviews and proposed focusing on the two that mattered most.”

In an interview, explain how you compared several viewpoints rather than sounding like you hold the answer. Asked about advising a junior colleague, describe how you helped them decide for themselves.

How perspective works with other strengths

Where judgment checks the evidence, perspective places it in context. With love or kindness, advice lands warmly, and humility reminds you that your view is one view.

Career-wise it links to counselling, coaching and planning. Combining it with Social or Enterprising interests makes options more concrete.

How research treats perspective

The VIA list began with Peterson and Seligman’s 2004 handbook, where perspective is one of five strengths under Wisdom and Knowledge. Some wisdom researchers link it more to reflecting on experience than to age itself.

The VIA-IS is popular, but factor analyses do not cleanly confirm the six-virtue structure, and that question remains debated. A score shows a tendency, not proof of wisdom; reading VIA next to RIASEC adds a career angle.

Perspective as a character strength: common questions

What does perspective mean as a VIA strength?

It is linking experiences to see the bigger picture and giving advice that helps others. It differs from being well read, and where it shines varies from person to person.

What careers suit the perspective strength?

Counselling, coaching, teaching, strategy and editing all involve setting direction. One strength alone cannot choose a job, so look at your interests with the RIASEC test.

Will a strong perspective make me seem preachy?

It can when advice comes unasked. Checking first with “can I share a thought?” tends to prevent that.

Can perspective be a top strength when you are young?

Yes. It does not arrive automatically with age, and individual differences are large. Compare your VIA character strengths test result with feedback from people who know you.
