One of the 24 VIA character strengths, under the virtue of Courage. Strengths of pushing toward goals despite difficulty.

How it shows up

  • You can get things off to a fast start and liven up a room.
  • Once something grabs your interest, you can get deeply absorbed.
  • If you manage the ups and downs of your energy, you can keep going longer.

Ways to use this strength

  • Schedule important work when your energy is highest.
  • For a task that’s hard to start, commit to just the first 2 minutes.
  • Basic routines like sleep and exercise keep your zest going.

When overused

If you run too hot, you can burn out or wear out the people around you, so pace yourself.

Zest: how vitality spreads to the people around you

Zest is approaching life and work wholeheartedly rather than halfway. It is drawing energy from a morning walk, or arriving at the first meeting of a new project with ideas already sketched. It does not mean being loud or outgoing; many people feel alive while quietly absorbed in something.

With others it lifts the mood: proposing the weekend plan, or coaxing a tired friend out for a short walk. In study it can produce bursts of speed in subjects that grab you, while subjects that lost their spark feel unusually heavy.

When zest runs too high or too low

Niemiec’s golden mean means using a strength in the amount a moment calls for. Excess zest fills the calendar until you crash all at once, or looks overexcited in a room that needs calm. Finding other people’s pace frustrating can be a sign of overuse.

Too little, and days feel made of obligations with no spark. If that lasts more than two weeks and sleep or appetite change too, it may be more than a strength question; talk it over with a professional.

New habits that rekindle zest

In 2005, Seligman’s research group asked online volunteers to apply a top strength in a novel way each day for a week, and that group grew happier. Studies retesting the method have sometimes found weaker effects, so use it to learn what works for you rather than expecting a sure result.

Start with movement: a ten-minute walk after lunch, one new kind of exercise, a favourite song first thing in the morning. Colour-code your calendar into what gives energy and what drains it.

Wording zest for a cover letter or interview

“I am passionate” sounds empty without evidence. In a cover letter, show what your energy left behind: “I added mini-games and a pre-event poll to a poorly attended department event and doubled turnout.”

In an interview, specific detail about your field conveys zest better than volume. If asked how you recovered from a tired period, say honestly how you manage your energy.

Strengths that make zest last

With perseverance, the opening spark carries to the end. Self-regulation rations the energy, and humor turns it into the kind of presence that gets a whole team laughing.

Zest overlaps with the positive-emotion side of Big Five extraversion, yet introverted people can score high too.

Zest and life satisfaction in the research

Peterson and Seligman’s 2004 classification places zest under Courage. In Park et al. (2004), zest ranked near the top for its link with life satisfaction, and later work connected it with satisfaction at work. These are correlations, so the direction of cause stays open.

Grouping VIA-IS scores into six virtues does not hold up consistently in factor analyses, a debate that continues. To see where the strength meets the job market, read VIA and RIASEC side by side.

Zest as a character strength: common questions

What does zest mean as a VIA strength?

It is energy for approaching life and work fully and with vitality. It is not the same as extraversion, and how it shows varies from person to person.

What careers suit the zest strength?

Teaching, sport and leisure, event planning, sales and hands-on fieldwork all trade in energy. Comparing with your Holland RIASEC results makes the source of that energy clearer.

Can an introvert have zest as a top strength?

Yes. Zest is closer to feeling alive in absorbing work than to meeting many people, so quiet people tend to score high too.

My zest has dropped lately. Has the strength gone?

Scores can shift with circumstances, and they tend to dip under fatigue or stress. Rest first, and if the low stays, talk to a professional. Retaking the VIA character strengths test later is also an option.
