VIA character strength
Creativity
You tend to link ideas in new ways and improve how things are done.
- #Wisdom
One of the 24 VIA character strengths, under the virtue of Wisdom. Strengths of learning, thinking and finding new ways.
How it shows up
- When you see a problem, you naturally ask “Is there another way?”
- You often run small experiments to give your ideas shape quickly.
- New things fire you up, but finishing what you start and checking that it works matter too.
Ways to use this strength
- Pick one small hassle that keeps coming back and think of a fix that takes 5 minutes.
- Move ideas along in three steps: try a small version, write down what happened, and if it works, build on it.
- Decide up front what “done” looks like, so it’s easier to finish.
When overused
If you keep reworking things, important deadlines can slip and agreements can take longer to reach.
Try this week
This week, pick one annoyance that keeps repeating and try the smallest possible fix right away.

Creativity as a character strength, beyond the art studio
In the VIA classification, creativity means coming up with ideas and ways of doing things that are both new and useful. It shows up in a dinner improvised from leftovers or a spreadsheet formula that saves a colleague an hour every Friday.
With friends, it can mean suggesting a walk instead of another round of the same argument. At work, it asks whether the monthly report needs its current shape at all.
Too much or too little creativity
Ryan Niemiec (2019) borrows Aristotle’s golden mean to describe strengths: each one has an overuse, an underuse and a best fit for the situation. Overused, creativity rewrites processes that already work, or produces ideas faster than anyone, including you, can finish them.
Underused, it settles for “that’s how we do it here” and keeps good ideas quiet in meetings. The right amount shifts with the goal and the people involved, which is the point of the golden mean.
Ways to build creativity this week
Seligman and colleagues (2005) asked online participants to use one of their top strengths in a new way every day for a week. That group reported more happiness for several months, though later replications found smaller effects, so treat it as an experiment.
For creativity, pick one daily “different on purpose”: a new route to work, a slide summarised as one sketch. Each evening, note what you changed and how it went.
How to describe creativity to an employer, on paper and in person
Anyone can write “I am creative”. In a cover letter, describe what you changed and what improved: “I replaced our club’s one-off posters with three reusable templates, which halved design time each semester.”
If an interview asks about an idea that failed, explain how you tested it and what you would check sooner next time. Showing that you finish ideas, not only start them, makes the strength credible.
Strengths that pair well with creativity
With perseverance, an idea gets as far as a working prototype. Judgment helps choose which of ten ideas to drop, and social intelligence turns a new proposal into words colleagues can accept.
For career thinking, compare it with the Artistic interest type or Big Five openness. A strength describes how you work at your best; an interest describes which activities draw you in.
Where creativity sits in the VIA model, and the limits
The 24-strength, six-virtue model comes from Peterson and Seligman’s 2004 handbook, Character Strengths and Virtues, which places creativity under Wisdom. The VIA-IS questionnaire that measures it is widely used in research and coaching, yet factor analyses rarely reproduce the six virtues neatly, and the structure is still debated.
A self-report score reflects how much you see yourself enjoying new approaches. It is not a test of creative output, so check it against what you actually make.
Creativity as a character strength: common questions
What does creativity mean as a VIA strength?
It is a tendency to find new and useful ways to solve problems, from art to everyday fixes at home or work. Where it shows up most varies from person to person.
What jobs suit the creativity strength?
Roles that ask for fresh options, such as design, content, product planning or research and development. A strength alone does not pick a career, so add the RIASEC interest test and the VIA and RIASEC guide.
Creativity is near the bottom of my VIA results. Am I not creative?
Not necessarily. VIA ranks your own 24 strengths against each other, so a lower place means you reach for it less often, not that it is missing.
How do I confirm creativity is a signature strength?
Look at your top results on the VIA character strengths test and notice for a week whether using it energises you. A score on its own is a starting point; feedback from others helps.
